Trying to get adult humor

Ian, Dan and I were watching Evan Almighty last night. At one point early in the movie Steve Carell passes a movie theater marquee which read "The 40 Year Old Virgin Mary". Dan, Ian and I all laughed out loud and Ian stated "Oh I get it". While we were all still laughing I asked Ian "What do you get about it?", his laughter abruptly stopped and he said "Actually I don't". That statement obviously resulted in more laughter from Dan and I while Ian sat there trying to figure out what was so darn funny.
